    Executive Vice-President

    Melanie Broady

Melanie is currently a Claims Representative in the WSU at the Auburn Teleservice Center (ATSC), and was formerly a Teleservice Representative. She started her career at Social Security in 2010. Melanie began her Union representational work in AFGE Local 3937's intern program, and is currently EVP on the Executive Board.  She is also a local representative at the ATSC, and for multiple other office locations.

She is a graduate of Whatcom Community College, Western Washington University, and University of Washington School of Law. She is married and has two teenage sons. Prior to her employment at SSA, Melanie was an advocate/representative for low income families facing housing and justice issues, domestic violence victims in contentious family law matters, homeless youth and indigenous people in crisis, and community members with civil rights concerns.  She also held several positions at a local Credit Union, including branch manager.

    First Vice President

    Cassandra Butler

Cassandra started with SSA in 2006 as a Service Representative in Spokane, WA. Currently she is working in the Office of Quality Review in Seattle, Washington where she serves as the local onsite Union representative as well as Local 3937 1st VP and Regional VP for Council 224. Her Union work began with the AFGE Local 3937 Internship program in 2014 and has continued to grow from there. She is active in community organizations in Spokane, WA and hopes to become active in her new town of Seattle. When not at work, Cassandra enjoys spending time with her two beautiful children.

    Second Vice-President

    John Pfannenstein

John started his career at SSA in 2008. Currently a Claims Representative, he serves as our 2nd VP as well as the Local AFGE Representative for his home office in Lynnwood, WA and multiple other locations.  Committed to ensuring fairness in the workplace, John came to us through our AFGE Local 3937 Internship program, and he looks forward to advocating for the rights of his SSA colleagues both within his office and throughout the Agency.

    Third Vice President

    Cinthia Diaz-Santiago

Cinthia was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She earned a MBA from University of Phoenix in Human Resources and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico. She is married, has two sons, and enjoys spending time with her family and visiting her beautiful Puerto Rico. Her career with SSA began as a Service Representative in Caldwell, ID in 2009. Her hard work earned her a promotion as a Claim Representative and transfer to Boise, ID.

She became a Union member on her first day at the Agency.  Cinthia has always been interested in helping other employees and fighting for what is right. She is the go to person when other employees have questions about the contract and she has helped other employees join the Union as well. When the Internship program for the Local opened solicitations for 2015, she did not hesitate to apply; it offered exactly what she wanted - a place to learn and understand the behind the scenes of how our Local works and to learn Union procedures. Since then she began serving as the primary representative of her local office in Boise, ID and other locations, and her passion for helping others resulted in her recent election to the 3rd VP position for the Local.  She strives to create a better environment between management and employees.

“You are never strong enough that you don’t need help.”  - César Chávez

    Laura Novakoski

Laura began her SSA career in 1994 in Wisconsin, before moving to Oregon in 1998.  She volunteered to become a local representative in the Portland NE office in 2003, and became a Local Officer (as Secretary) in 2004.  She now works in the Portland Metro office, mentors newer local reps, and serves as an off-site local representative for several other SSA offices in her area (when there isn't anyone on-site ready to give it a try themselves, which we always encourage!).  She has always been an enthusiastic advocate for employees, and has gradually added more concrete labor education and experience - from training in basic representative and Union women's issues, to relocation bargaining and arbitration preparation.

As Secretary, she manages the Local's communications with our bargaining unit, our members and local representatives, she writes and edits Executive Board and Local Business meeting minutes, helps to manage our website and Facebook pages, archives records and handles many other small details that keep the Local running smoothly.

    James Paxton

James started with SSA in October of 2010 as a Service Representative.  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resource management from Eastern Washington University in June of 2010. He became part of the Union shortly after being hired in January of 2011.  In the spring of 2013 he became the Health and Safety Representative for the Spokane FO.  He was selected to participate in the AFGE Local 3937 Internship program and in 2017 was elected as our new Treasurer.

    Ivan Weich

Ivan started work at SSA in 1990 as a TSR and has been a Union member since 1992.  He started Union representation as part of Local 2879 in San Diego.  Ivan has had experience and training in both EEOC and MSPB.  He served as Secretary Treasurer of Local 2879 until he transferred to the Seattle Region as an SR.  In 2007, Ivan ran for a delegate position in our Local and also served on the Local's audit committee.  In 2010, he was elected to Sergeant-at-Arms, and he was subsequently elected as District 11's Fair Practices Affirmative Action Coordinator.  Ivan is our go-to person for Worker's Compensation.

He retired from being a CR in the Kitsap Office. Ivan has written and published a murder mystery and he also serves as a facilitator for murder mystery parties.  He enjoys cooking, leather-work and spending time with his girlfriend and his chihuahua.
